Fifty Years of Preservation
In 2027, Historic Tyler turns fifty. A golden anniversary is a rare chance to look back at what we've saved — and forward to what comes next.
Half a century of holding on to what matters
When a handful of Tyler residents founded Historic Tyler, Inc. in 1977, much of the city's architectural heritage was vanishing without record or resistance. Fifty years later, Tyler has eight National Register districts, two local overlay districts, dozens of historical markers, and a community that understands preservation as civic work.
Our 50th year, 2027, is a milestone worth marking well. The concepts below outline how Historic Tyler could celebrate — a starting point for the board to shape together.
How we could mark the 50th
Six concepts for an anniversary year that honors our history, raises lasting support, and welcomes new preservationists into the fold.
The 50th Anniversary Tour
A landmark edition of Historic Tyler on Tour — an expanded route, a commemorative booklet, and the city's finest preserved homes opened in our honor.
A Golden Anniversary Gala
An evening of celebration bringing together members past and present, founding families, civic partners, and the homeowners who make preservation real.
"Fifty Saved Places"
A travelling photographic exhibition pairing then-and-now images of buildings Historic Tyler has documented, advocated for, or helped rescue.
The 50th Anniversary Fund
A dedicated preservation fund — endowing restoration grants and historical markers so the next fifty years are resourced from day one.
An Oral History Project
Recorded conversations with founders, longtime members, and homeowners — preserving the people's story alongside the buildings'.
Honoring Our Founders
A permanent tribute to the 1977 founders and the volunteers whose decades of work built the organization we have today.
"50 for 50" — fifty new members for fifty years
An anniversary membership drive inviting fifty new households into Historic Tyler — and a matching legacy-giving challenge to grow the preservation fund. A simple, shareable goal the whole board can rally behind.
